Information

  • Board Foot (sawn lumber): Board Feet is a measure of volume of a piece of material. It is calculated by (Width (in inches) * Length (in feet) * Thickness (in inches)) /12. 1 Board foot is equal to a 12" x 12" piece of material 1" thick. Try the board foot calculator below!
  • Board Feet (log timber): To calculate how many board feet are in a log, you need 3 things: 1) The length of the log. 2) The diameter of the SMALL end of the log INSIDE the bark layer. 3) Which scale to use.

There are 3 scales commonly used in the U.S. for determining the volume of a log. Length is denoted by 'L', diameter is denoted by 'D'
    • Doyle: Easiest and most commonly used. Drawbacks: does not account for log taper or defects. Over scales large logs and under scales small logs.
      (D-4)2 * (L /16)
    • International 1/4": vastly more complicated to use but by far the most accurate of all the scales.
      0.04976191 * L * D2 + 0.006220239 * L2 * D - 0.1854762 * L * D + 0.0002591767 * L3 - 0.01159226 * L2 + 0.04222222 * L
    • Scribner: Least commonly used. Accurate enough for small logs under 28" diameter and 16' or less.
      (.79D2 -2D -4)L/16
  • Hardwoods vs. Softwoods:The general rule of thumb is, deciduous trees are a hardwood, while coniferous trees are softwoods. However, this does not actually indicate the true hardness of a species of wood. For that, you must look at the Janka rating for that wood species. The higher the Janka value, the harder the wood actually is. As you can see below, Southern Yellow Pine, although considered a softwood, is actually harder than Yellow Poplar, a hardwood.
Try using the calculator(s) below to see how many board feet are in your log.

  • All materials are cut to order unless otherwise specified
  • Hardwood and softwood pricing is based upon standard cuts of 1' - 3" thickness and up to 12" widths up to 12' lengths.
  • For specialty cuts, please call us for pricing. (Mantles, > 12' lengths, > 12" widths)
  • Specialty materials are NOT reflected in the listed prices. Examples: Birdseye Maple, Ambrosia Maple, Flamed Box Elder

Bundles

Occasionally, we will offer bundles of mixed woods from our supply at discounted rates. Usually, these bundles are either 4/4 (1" thick) or 8/4 (2" thick) width random lengths and widths. They may also contain some materials that have not been edged.
